Practical AI guidance

AI for Small Business Owners Who Don't Know Where to Start

You don't need every AI tool. You need to understand where AI can actually save you time, improve how you work and help you make better decisions, without replacing the judgment and relationships your business depends on.

One-Hour Business Consulting · $247

Everyone is telling business owners to use AI. That doesn't mean everything needs AI.

Small-business owners hear about AI, ChatGPT, automation, agents and new tools constantly. The pressure to keep up can make it feel as if choosing more technology is the same as making progress.

Usually, the first problem is not a lack of technology. It is not knowing which business problems AI could genuinely help solve, where it could save meaningful time, what information or processes should be organized first, which tools are unnecessary and what should remain human.

Start with the business problem, not the AI tool.

I approach AI as a business consultant and experienced founder/operator. The question is always the same: What problem are we trying to solve, and is AI actually the right tool for it?

Useful applications

Where AI can actually help a small business

These are ways I genuinely use AI inside business work. They are not a tool list or a promise that every business should use AI in the same way.

Research

I use AI to organize market, customer, competitor and industry information so I can understand a subject faster and ask better questions.

Decision support

AI can help organize options, questions, assumptions and information before a decision. It supports the decision; the owner remains responsible for making it.

Business planning

It can help turn ideas, priorities and scattered information into clearer plans and practical next steps.

Processes and documentation

It can help turn knowledge that lives in an owner's head into processes, standard operating procedures, checklists and reusable documentation.

Content and communication

It can help organize ideas, outlines and information while the owner protects the real voice, point of view and judgment behind the message.

Website and SEO work

I use it to research questions customers ask, examine search intent, organize website information and improve the clarity of online content.

Meeting and project preparation

It can organize background information, questions, priorities and next steps before the work begins.

Knowledge management

It can help capture what an owner has learned so useful business knowledge does not disappear every time a project ends.

Keep the human

What I would not hand over to AI

Just because something can be automated doesn't mean it should be.

Efficiency is not the only objective of a business. Some work depends on judgment, accountability, trust and human understanding.

  • Final business judgment
  • Important customer relationships
  • Relationship building and trust
  • Sensitive decisions without human review
  • Accountability for the outcome
  • The owner's authentic perspective
  • Decisions requiring context AI does not possess
  • Publishing material without thoughtful human review

Working experience

How I use AI in my own business

I use AI inside a real operating business. It helps me with research, website development, SEO research and planning, content development, business planning, process creation, SOPs and documentation.

I also use it to organize information, work through business decisions, prepare for meetings and projects, support client work and client-delivery preparation, and capture repeatable knowledge that can become a reusable business asset.

It does not run my company. I decide what matters, provide the context, question the output and remain accountable for the work. My founder/operator experience is what helps me judge where a tool is useful and where it is getting in the way.

An honest answer

Do I need an AI consultant for my small business?

Many small-business owners and solopreneurs do not need a large AI implementation project. They may simply need someone who understands business to help them decide where AI could help, what to use it for and what to leave alone.

A practical conversation can help answer: What process should be fixed before trying to automate it? Which repetitive work is actually worth addressing? Where am I adding unnecessary technology?

I approach those questions as a business consultant, not as a technology seller. I do not sell AI software, custom development or automation services. My role is to help you understand the business problem first.

If AI is only one part of a larger growth question, you can also see how I work as a business growth consultant.

Cost and scope

What should AI consulting cost a small business?

There is no single market price. The cost depends on whether you need a focused conversation and strategic direction, workflow or process analysis, software selection, technical integrations, custom development or organization-wide implementation.

If you have one specific question and want to determine where AI could practically help your business, my One-Hour Business Consulting session is a straightforward place to start.

The session does not include technical implementation, custom automation or software development.

A practical framework

Start with one business problem

Before asking “Which AI tool should I buy?” ask:

  1. 1.What am I trying to accomplish?
  2. 2.Where am I losing unnecessary time?
  3. 3.What information do I repeatedly have to find or reorganize?
  4. 4.What process depends too heavily on information living in my head?
  5. 5.What repetitive work could potentially be assisted?
  6. 6.Where is human judgment or a relationship too important to automate?

Once the problem is clear, you can decide whether AI is appropriate, what role it should play and what oversight the work requires.

The broader picture

When the problem is bigger than AI

Sometimes an owner thinks they have an AI problem when the underlying issue is unclear strategy, weak visibility, inconsistent customer experience, inefficient operations, too many priorities or unclear growth direction.

AI may be one tool in the solution. It cannot substitute for understanding the business. The Business Visibility & Growth Assessment examines the business more broadly across Strategy, Visibility, Customer Experience, Operations and Growth.

If visibility is the part you are trying to understand, read more about where business visibility breaks down.

Questions

Practical AI questions from small-business owners

How can I use AI in my small business?

Start with one real business problem. AI may help you research, organize information, document a process, prepare for a meeting, develop a plan or structure an early draft. The useful question is not what AI can do in general. It is whether AI is appropriate for the work in front of you.

Do small businesses need an AI consultant?

Not always. Many owners do not need a large implementation project. They may need an experienced business perspective to identify where AI could help, what should stay human and which process needs to be fixed before any tool is added. That is how I approach the question as a business consultant.

What can AI automate in a small business?

AI may assist with repetitive research, information organization, first-pass documentation, meeting preparation and parts of a well-defined workflow. The process should be understood first, and the output still needs an accountable human owner.

What should a small business not automate with AI?

Do not hand over final judgment, sensitive decisions, accountability, important customer relationships or work that depends on context the tool does not possess. Just because something can be automated does not mean it should be.

How much does AI consulting cost for a small business?

Costs vary widely. A focused strategy conversation is different from workflow analysis, software selection, technical integrations, custom development or organization-wide implementation. My One-Hour Business Consulting session is $247 for an owner with one specific question. It does not include technical implementation, custom automation or software development.

Can ChatGPT help me run my small business?

ChatGPT can help with research, organizing information, planning, documentation and early drafts when you give it useful context and review the work carefully. It should not run the business for you or replace your judgment, accountability or customer understanding.

Do I need technical experience to use AI in my business?

You do not need to be a developer to use AI for practical research, planning and organization. You do need to understand the business problem, protect sensitive information, review the output and know when a human decision matters more than speed.

You don't need every AI tool. Start with the problem that matters.

If you have one specific business question, including where AI could help, bring it to a one-hour consulting session and we'll work through your clearest next step.
